Beyond awnings — Perth Blinds and Shutters designs and installs complete outdoor shade solutions including shade sails, pergola covers, sun screens and freestanding shade structures to transform any outdoor space into a comfortable year-round retreat.
Not every outdoor space suits a traditional awning. Irregular shapes, freestanding areas away from the house wall, pool surrounds, car parking bays, and large commercial outdoor areas all require different approaches to effective shade. Our outdoor shade solutions range covers all of these — from simple shade sails tensioned between posts and walls, to engineered motorised pergola shade systems and custom sun screen enclosures.
Shade sails are among the most popular solutions for Perth pools, playgrounds and entertaining areas. Tensioned between three or four anchor points, they create a stylish, architecturally interesting shade canopy without the rigidity of a fixed structure. Available in waterproof and UV-blocking fabrics in dozens of colours, shade sails are custom cut to the exact shape of your space.
For pergolas, we offer louvred roof inserts, shade cloth covers and solid polycarbonate or Colorbond inserts that transform an open pergola frame into a weatherproof outdoor room. Combined with our outdoor blinds and roller shutters, a pergola shade cover completes the full outdoor enclosure — giving you a genuinely usable space in every Perth season.

An awning is attached to a building wall and supported by arms or a fixed frame projecting from that wall. A shade sail is a tensioned fabric panel anchored at three or four points — which can be any combination of building walls, existing structures and purpose-installed posts. Shade sails are more flexible in placement and create a distinctive visual character, but require adequate anchor points. We advise on the best solution for your space during the free quote.
Most quality shade sails are made from HDPE (high-density polyethylene) mesh fabric that is UV-stabilised and designed to shed light rain. However, standard shade sails are not fully waterproof — water can drip through the weave in heavy rain. Fully waterproof shade sails using PVC-coated fabrics are available and recommended for areas where complete rain exclusion is needed. We discuss this during the quote and recommend the right fabric for your usage.
Yes — this is one of our most popular services. We can add a range of shade covers to existing pergola frames including shade cloth stretched over rafters, clear or tinted polycarbonate sheeting for a waterproof but light-admitting cover, or Colorbond steel for a solid roof. The choice depends on how much light you want to admit and your budget. We assess the existing structure for suitability during the free quote.
Quality shade sails in HDPE mesh typically last 10 to 15 years with proper tensioning and maintenance. Pergola covers in polycarbonate or Colorbond have similar or longer lifespans. The most important factor in longevity is correct installation — sails that are not properly tensioned will flap in the wind and degrade much faster. All our installations are engineered for the appropriate tension and anchoring.
Yes — certain pergola louvre systems and larger shade structures can be motorised for easy operation. Motorised louvred pergola roofs are increasingly popular in Perth, allowing you to adjust the angle of the louvres for partial shade or full enclosure at the touch of a button. We discuss motorisation options during the consultation for any shade project.
